I just spent the entire day shopping for mob dresses with my mom. We went to two malls: South Coast Plaza and Main Place, and found NOTHING at either! Seriously, the only dresses that Nordstrom's had were over $650 (that's how much my wedding dress was!) and all the other stores only had overly sequined evening gowns or prom dresses. It was horrible. If mom was 35 and a size 8 it would have been no problem, but my mom is 57 and a size 16. We did find one dress at JC Penny, but it was cheap polyester that itched and looked cheap. Ugh. We finally got home just over an hour ago and started looking online. It seems as if the stores carry a lot of stuff online that they don't have in the stores. My mom ended up purchasing the dress pictured below from Nordstroms.com. She isn't in love with it, but she figures it is better than nothing and she can always return it if she gets lucky and finds something she loves later. Ugh. Anyone else having the same issue? (David's Bridal, Alfred Angelo, Macy's, Ann Taylor, etc... no luck!)

Is there a tradition in US to the mother of the bride to dress in white / ivory / cream...? I always seem to notice it in films and TV shows and wondered if it were the case.
My mum will just be shopping for a dress as if she were a normal wedding guest... is that not the case fo ryou too?
man....i'm a little nervous about my mom's attire as well. i really wish she would start looking around now. primarily bc i expect it to take a few months to find something that will look great on her and be affordable.
much to my dismay, my mom is a procrastinator. it would not be out of character for her to look for her dress the week of my wedding! i'm just praying it doesnt come down to that.......
Hi Christina, you should try this store in Temple City called 2000 Dreams. They have a huge rack of MOB dresses.
Address: 9579 Las Tunas Drive
Temple City, Ca. 91780
Phone: (626) 309 - 1727
Fax: (626) 309 - 6069
guilty secret -- the tradition is that the MOB wears a light colored dress if it is a daytime or early evening wedding, and a more flashy sequined one if it is a nighttime wedding. After the MOB buys her dress, then the FMIL buys one that "complements" the MOB dress. The picture shown on my website is much lighter than the dress really is. Champagne is a very popular MOB color. The MOB should NEVER wear white, and Ivory should be avoided if it is the brides dress color.
Lady T -- I highly suggest you go shopping with your mom. My mom is also a procrastinator, mainly because she isn't happy with her body right now. We got in a fight because she kept saying that she was planning on losing weight. I finally snapped and told her that she's known about the wedding since November and she hasn't lost any weight, how is she suddenly going to lose weight 2 months before my wedding. After a good cry (for both of us) she finally agreed that it wouldn't hurt to go look, and if she did lose weight we could get the dress taken in. Once we did go shopping we both quickly realized that weight was the least of our worries -- there just isn't much out there.
Thanks for explaining, it all makes a lot more sense now!
Hi Calioc- I just found your blog from your weddingbee post and had the same issue for MOB dresses. We spent hours looking online at sites that make dresses for the MOB and didn't find much. My mom just starting going to bridal shops and trying things on and lucked out. She found a beautiful dress that was 50% off and the perfect color. I would suggest trying the local shops around because the department stores carry nothing anymore- which makes our lives so difficult! =)
